MULTIPLICATION FACTS

[Teach the multiplication facts in short fast-moving sessions.]

In our daily lives we often need to remember multiplication facts because we won't always have a multiplication table or calculator handy.

You will soon be doing pencil and paper multiplication and division. To do so, you must know the multiplication facts. Once you learn these facts, you will never forget them.

These multiplication facts are especially easy to remember:

Script for Next Challenges
  1. As I point to each number questions in a line, I will say the product, and you say the complete multiplication fact. [e.g., 2 x 5 = 10]
  2. I will point to the number questions in order in the line, and you say the product "quick as a flash." [Repeat until perfect. Correct errors by simply saying the product.]
  3. I will point to the number questions out of order in the line, and you say the product "quick as a flash." [Repeat until perfect.]
  4. Having finished the lines in the challenge, I will point to number questions in any of the lines, and you say the products "quick as a flash." [When he can't remember a fact, tell him the fact (e.g., 2 x 9 = 18) and have him say it as he writes it.]
  5. Finally, I will give you a story problem.

DIVISION FACTS

Guess what? Since you have learned the multiplication facts, you already know the division facts! For each multiplication fact that you learned, you learned two division facts.

Count off a set of 5 pennies and place them in a row. Place a second set of 5 pennies beneath the first set and a third set of 5 pennies beneath the second set. Now you have a grid that is 5 pennies wide and 3 pennies high. Are there 3 sets of 5 pennies or 15 pennies? Here is the multiplication fact: 3 x 5 = 15 or 5 x 3 = 15.

Now let's do division. How many sets of 5 can be separated from 15? Look at the pennies. It's easy to see that you can separate 3 sets of 5 from 15. Here is the division fact: 15 ÷ 5 = 3. Now, turn your head sideways. How many sets of 3 can be separated from 15? You can see that you can separate 5 sets of 3 from 15. Here is the division fact: 15 ÷ 3 = 5. So remember that for every multiplication fact there are two division facts.

Here are examples of how you change multiplication facts into division facts:

1) Number question: 15 ÷ 3 = ? Think 3 x ? = 15. Remember the multiplication fact: 3 x 5 = 15.
2) Number question: 15 ÷ 5 = ? Think 5 x ? = 15. Remember the multiplication fact: 5 x 3 = 15.

CHALLENGE 1: Fifteen boys came to a gymnasium to play basketball. How many 5-member teams can they have? What is the division number question? What multiplication fact do you need to remember?

(Change 15 ÷ 5 = ? to 5 x 3 = 15)

CHALLENGE 2: The local candy store sells 6 mints for 30 cents. How much is that for each mint? What multiplication fact can you use?

CHALLENGE 3: Make these divisions by recalling the right multiplication facts:

18 ÷ 3 = ? , 24 ÷ 4 = ? , 45 ÷ 5 = ? , 56 ÷ 7 = ? , 72 ÷ 9 = ?
