SPELLING SCRIPT FOR TEACHERS

The phonics/writing/spelling method used in this one-on-one tutoring program can also be adapted to classroom or group instruction, and the same words and sentences may be used. Here are suggested steps:

  1. Select a group of students on the basis of the results of a writing/spelling/reading inventory such as Basic Reading, Writing, and Spelling Inventory.
  2. Prepare work sheets. You can use beginner's writing paper having 3/4-inch writing spaces with a dotted waist line or make your own. I use narrow lined notebook paper and ink the first, third, fourth, sixth, seventh line, and so on. This makes a one line space between the writing spaces. You can also add a dashed waist line in the middle of the writing spaces. Save this sheet for making more work sheets. Photocopy the lined sheet and on the photocopy write the words that you want to teach one above another using continuous stroke manuscript. You may use the words in the program or select your own.
  3. Make photocopies of the completed work sheet for the students.
  4. Prepare your teaching routine. Here is a suggested script:

    1. Please write your first name on your work sheet where I am pointing. I will help those who need it.
    2. [For the review of the previous day's work you can have them write the keywords on a line below the current day's work.
    3. I am going to say the words in a sentence. Our keyword in the sentence is _______. Listen to the sounds in the keyword:/__/ /__/ /__/. How many different sounds did you hear?
    4. We are all going to say each sound together as I write it.
    5. Look at the word [point to it] on your work sheet. We will all say each sound as we trace the letters in the keyword and then say the word. Notice where I am going to start tracing the first letter of the word [on the chalk board]. The first sound is /__/. [Trace it and continue with the other sounds.]
    6. [Quickly check their tracing and then have them repeat the step by saying the word, saying the sounds and tracing the letters, and saying the word. Repeat again if needed.]
    7. Now we are all going to say the keyword, say and write the sounds of the word on the same line, and say the word. Start the word where I am pointing.
    8. [Quickly check their first word and then have them repeat the step by saying the sounds, writing the sounds, and saying the word. Repeat again if needed.]
    9. Turn your paper over. I will say the keyword, and you say it, write each sound in it, and say the word. [Quickly check their work.]

    After finishing the group---

    1. I am going to say each word, and you say the word, say and write each sound in each word on this line [point to the line on the back of the sheet].
    2. [Pick up and review the work sheets to see who needs additional work and, if all of the words were not covered, to use at the next lesson.]
